I’ve been following politics for more than 40 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. Up to 3 months ago, there were very fringe people in Canada or the UK who were anti-American but the vast majority of people liked, even admired, the US even when disagreeing with some policies.
What a difference three months makes! My Canadian family members cut short their annual Florida vacation and have rebooked for Costa Rica next year. Canadian shops have emptied their shelves of visibly American products. The incredibly unpopular governing party in Canada went up over 20% in the polls after retaliating against US tariffs – the most popular tax increase of all time!
I live in Britain and I’ve heard praise for Germany cranking up its military spending – something that would have given British people the heebie jeebies last December- because everyone in Europe has realised that the Trump-led US is not really their ally.
Trump has ruined it, pissed all over it and burned it for good measure.
The EU has just agreed to rearm itself – not because Trump wanted them to but because they can no longer trust The US as an ally not just for four years but long term!
Take this in for a moment… really consider it. There is a reason this continent disarmed. When it’s armed it’s fucking dangerous. Like really, really dangerous. Only difference now is that it’s united rather than fractured. That’s really terrible… very terrible news for The US.
Why? Let’s see – Europe is your biggest partner in essentially everything from intelligence to military matters – it procures BILLIONS in US equipment and because it’s historically understood that The US pulls the majority of the military might weight it has allowed itself to be at the beck and call of American Foreign and Military policy – hence why when The US has had an issue with anyone there’s 30 countries backing it armed with sanctions and other punishments.
When Libya stepped out of line, it wasn’t just US ships and Planes out there it was European ships too. The US has benefited MASSIVELY from being a defensive shield to Europe. The only actual threat to US dominance is Europe itself, it’s the only alternative to The US.
The EU has a bigger population, the second largest combined economy in the World and due to the long history of Europe it has ties across the globe, France, Italy, The Dutch and Spain all having been major colonial powers/empires. Of course add into this the British / Commonwealth comprising over 50 Nations across the World and that equates to a massive amount of soft power. The only reason The US has been able to get what it needs done over the years boils down to three things:
- Its military
- its economy
- Its diplomatic alliance with Europe
Europe is home to 4 major Global Financial centres, some of the most impressive defence, aerospace and research centres operate in Europe, like BAE, Dassault, Airbus, GKN, etc
With its rearm plan for nearly €900 billion euros, Europe will be using only European defence companies, the lost sales alone and increase in project costs for The US without tens of countries buying and helping to fund will be exponential!
Rearm Europe is not capitulation to US demands but a Declaration of Independence. Ending decades of American dominance over Europe.
Opinion of The US is untrustworthy, irrational, arrogant and over confident. This is the decade where US decline begins.
